Meet Rafael Pinero, MD- Medical Doctor/Medical Director
Dr. Rafael Piñero is a renowned medical professional with a strong academic background and a commitment to excellence in Family Medicine. He graduated Magna cum Laude with his medical degree from the Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamon, Puerto Rico in 1994. Later that same year, Dr. Piñero relocated to Jacksonville, Florida to pursue his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Florida’s Shands Hospital. He has been providing high-quality care to his patients in private practice since completing his specialty residency in 1997 and getting Board-Certified in Family Medicine.
In 2006, he established his own practice, Piñero Preventive Medical Care, providing primary care and preventive services to everyone in the community of Orlando and Central Florida with special emphasis for the LGBTQ+ community. Dr. Piñero’s dedication to remaining at the forefront of medical advancements is evident through his memberships with the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Florida Medical Association, the GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality and keeping credentialed with local hospitals. He is also involved with several local non-profit organizations. With his extensive experience in the field of family medicine and community service, Dr. Piñero continues to make a significant impact in his community.
Meet Claudia Zuriarrain, APRN, DNP- Family Nurse Practitioner
Claudia is a dedicated healthcare professional with an extensive academic background. She earned her doctorate in nursing from the University of Florida in 2015, following a successful tenure as a registered nurse at the Primary Care Institute in Gainesville, Florida.
With a strong foundation in nutrition and fitness education, Claudia brings a holistic approach to her practice. Fluent in both spoken and written Spanish, she can effectively communicate with a diverse range of patients. Upon joining Piñero Preventive Medical Care in 2015, she has successfully taken the role of Clinical Care Coordinator which has helped the practice to meet quality measures and accreditations. Claudia’s commitment to excellence and patient care is evident with her work as a nurse practitioner.
Meet Giovanni Velez, MD- Medical Doctor
Dr. Giovanni Velez is a distinguished medical professional born in Puerto Rico with a wealth of experience and expertise. He obtained his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2008. He subsequently completed his Family Medicine residency training at the Mid-Hudson Family Practice Residency Program in Kingston, New York.
After successfully completing his training, Dr. Velez returned to Central Florida, where he established himself as a prominent figure in the medical community. He is a Board-Certified member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and is credentialed with local hospitals. Dr. Velez’s dedication is to provide high-quality care to his patients, embodying a commitment to excellence in Family Medicine.
Meet Yoandra Perez, APRN, MSN- Family Nurse Practitioner
Yoandra Perez is a highly accomplished healthcare professional with a diverse international background. She obtained her master’s degree in nursing from South College, Knoxville TN in 2021. Hailing from Cuba, Yoandra initially earned her medical degree in Cuba in 2010, subsequently practicing medicine as a primary care physician in Venezuela and Brazil for 5 years.
Following this, she made the transition to Houston, Texas, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 2019 before advancing to the role of nurse practitioner. Fluent in Spanish, Yoandra brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our practice, exemplifying a commitment to providing exceptional care to her patients.
Meet Catalina Alaín, APRN, MSN - Family Nurse Practitioner
Catalina Alaín, APRN is a retired US Air Force veteran with over two decades of clinical experience first, as registered nurse since 1998 and then as nurse practitioner since 2013. Catalina is certified both as a Family Nurse Practitioner and HIV specialist. She is about to complete her Nursing Doctorate (DNP) degree with a specialty in Lifestyle Medicine. During her career she has practiced medicine in different settings which has built a comprehensive foundation in patient care across multiple specialties and therefore, her passion for serving diverse, underserved and minority populations like those afflicted with HIV infections and the LGBTQ+ community. During her military career she performed as a Flight Nurse Practitioner, helping her develop strong leadership skills and commitment to quality medical care.
Catalina is fluent in Spanish and English. Outside the clinical setting, she enjoys an active lifestyle with road cycling, Latin dancing, and other outdoor activities. She enjoys reading and the company of her family and her dog Osiris and her cat Anubis. Ms. Alain is a well-rounded experienced provider that shares the mission statement of Piñero Preventive Medical Care emphasizing on preventive care, healthy lifestyle changes, HIV treatment and prevention.
