Women’s Health Specialist
Going in for routine exams is so important for women’s health. During your visit, your practitioner at Piñero Preventive Medical Care addresses all of the concerns women have including routine pap smears, birth control options, gynecological or breast pain. Our caring team can help you with any women’s health concerns you may have.
Gynecological Exams
Your first visit may be just a talk between you and our physician. You can find out what to expect at future visits and get information about how to stay healthy. We provide comprehensive pelvic exams to check your reproductive system for masses, growths or other abnormalities. We can provide you with a pap smear to screen you for cervical cancer.
Breast Care
As you age, it is important to take care of your breasts so that you can prevent diseases and even cancer. Those services include mammography, ultrasounds and/or breast MRI’s for screening, evaluation and treatments for breast cancer and other breast-related conditions such as cysts, noncancerous tumors and infections.
Birth Control
Birth control is any method used to prevent pregnancy. There are many different methods of birth control including condoms, IUDs, birth control pills, the rhythm method, vasectomy, and tubal ligation. We offer the following:
- Counseling
- Pills
- Depo-Provera
Sexual Wellness Screening
If you are sexually active, getting regularly tested for STIs/STDs is an important part of your overall health. Many STIs/STDs don’t cause any symptoms so getting tested is the only way to know. All STIs/STDs are treatable and many are curable. We provide screening, diagnosis, and treatments for most sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV testing and counseling. Our nurses, nurse practitioners, and doctors provide confidential exams and counseling related to your sexual and reproductive health. Call us to make an appointment.
PrEP Treatments
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a safe and effective HIV prevention option for women who want to take an active role in protecting their sexual health. When taken as prescribed, PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by over 99%.
PrEP is not only indicated for individuals at higher risk of HIV exposure, but also for women seeking preventive care options tailored to their lifestyle, health history, and personal risk factors.
Our providers offer confidential, individualized consultations to help patients determine the most appropriate PrEP option and provide guidance on available assistance programs.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
During menopause, your estrogen levels fall. Some women get uncomfortable symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness. HRT (also known as hormone therapy, menopausal hormone therapy, and estrogen replacement therapy) is the most effective treatment for menopause symptoms.
Women’s Health Q&A
Well-woman visits are routine exams that focus on the special health concerns women have. Most well-woman exams include:
- Overall wellness check
- Pap smears
- Pelvic exams
- Breast exams
- Blood work
- Urine testing
- Lymph nodes evaluation
- Check your pulse and blood pressure
- Birth control discussions
- STD prevention
- Vaccinations (if needed)
It’s a good idea to have your first well-woman exam when you are 13-15 years old. You might need one sooner if you’re sexually active or if you start menstruating at an earlier age. Unless a need arises, you probably won’t need to have a pelvic exam, pap smear, or breast exam until you reach age 21.
As uncomfortable as pelvic exams are sometimes, they’re quick and relatively painless. Pelvic exams, which may or may not include pap tests, are essential for:
- Screening for sexually transmitted diseases
- Finding the cause of abnormal bleeding
- Diagnosing vaginal infections, including yeast infections
- Identifying uterine fibroids, prolapses, or ovarian cysts
- Determining the best type of birth control for you
- Finding early warning signs of tumors or cancer
Yes. Women need hormones for all kinds of reasons. If you’re menopausal, for instance, you might need estrogen therapy to help you overcome hot flashes and vaginal discomfort.
Likely, yes. If you have breasts or a vagina, you still need to schedule your exam. While the term “well woman” implies the examination is for women, it is simply a commonly known phrase that targets health concerns related to your breasts or vagina. When scheduling your appointment, make sure to request a physical exam.
